Initially the acupuncturist will spend up to 30 minutes asking about your complaint, such as how long you've had the problem, your current symptoms, your health history, your diet, your sleeping habits and bowel movements and other information that may seem irrelevant to you - just remember that TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) is an holistic medical system that recognizes the link between body, mind and emotions. Your physical ailment may well have an emotional component too.
Acupuncture Treatment
Depending on your problem you will lie on the treatment table face down, or on your back, or on one side. The Acupuncture evaluation will reveal the diagnosis of the problem you are experiencing. Appropriate acupuncture points are then selected. The most common points are on your arms below your elbows, on your legs below your knees and along either side of your spine from your neck to your sacrum. Each point is swabbed with alcohol before the needle is inserted.
The Acupuncture Needles used are Tiny, (thin as a strand of hair), sterile, disposable needles which are discarded after each use. Needles are of a variety of sizes and length depending on the area being addressed. The stimulation felt from the needles may vary, such as a gentle electrical sensation, pressure to the area, or a gentle internal wavelike sensation moving all over the body. Should you experience any discomfort, inform the practitioner, and they will adjust the needles accordingly.
The treatments lasts approximately 30 to 45 minutes. The treatment atmosphere is usually calm, relaxing, soothing music, running water, and in some cases aromatherapy may be used to bring about a feeling of tranquility.
