Burn Your Ailments Away... Moxibustion when combined with Acupuncture is a match made in heaven. When we think about Eastern medicine the first thing that comes to mind is acupuncture. Many people are unaware that the Chinese word for Acupuncture “Zhen Jiu” translates literally to “Acupuncture and Moxibustion”. In ancient China, treatment was almost always comprised of inserting acupuncture needles along with the burning of particular herbs at acupuncture points, the therapy known as moxibustion. This simultaneous use of moxibustion along with the acupuncture needle intensifies the therapeutic benefit of the given acupuncture point.
Moxibustion is still popular today, and is frequently used with acupuncture to treat a variety of conditions with great success. The most common form of moxibustion treatment uses the ‘Moxa stick’. the stick consists of dried herbs tightly rolled in paper creating a cigar like stick. Moxa sticks can be used on their own to stimulate an acupuncture point or can be used on a point where an acupuncture needle has been inserted. The stick is held closely to the skin to maintain a comfortable level of heat and the practitioner places a finger next to the stimulated point to protect against the unlikely risk of burning. Other forms of Moxibustion includes the heating needle, Moxa cones and direct Moxa.
