Cervical Cancer Awareness Month: What You Need to Know
Rosemarie Allen • January 24, 2025

January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, a time to talk about a health issue that affects many women but can often be prevented.

At A Balanced You Acupuncture & Wellness Center in Florida, we want to help you and your family understand cervical cancer and how to stay healthy. Let’s break it down in a simple way!

What is Cervical Cancer?

Cervical cancer happens when the cells in a woman’s cervix grow abnormally. The cervix is the lower part of the uterus, which connects to the birth canal (vagina).

One of the biggest reasons people get cervical cancer is a virus called HPV (human papillomavirus). HPV is very common, and many people get it at some point in their lives. Most of the time, your body can fight off the virus, but sometimes it stays in the body and can cause problems later.

The good news? Cervical cancer is preventable when caught early. That’s why regular check-ups are so important!

How Can Cervical Cancer Be Prevented?

  1. Get Screened Regularly
Doctors use tests like Pap smears (or Pap tests) to check for any unusual cells in the cervix. Getting these tests on time can help catch problems early, before they turn into cancer.

  2. Get the HPV Vaccine
The HPV vaccine can protect you from the types of HPV that are most likely to cause cervical cancer. Many kids and teens get this vaccine to stay healthy as they grow up.

  3. Practice Healthy Habits
  • Don’t smoke. Smoking makes it harder for your body to fight infections.
  • Eat healthy foods. Fruits and veggies help keep your immune system strong.
  • Stay safe. Using protection during intimate activities can help prevent the spread of HPV.

  4.  Strengthen Your Immune System
A healthy immune system can fight off HPV and other viruses. Things like reducing stress, getting good sleep, and exercising can help keep your body strong.

How We Can Help

At A Balanced You Acupuncture & Wellness Center, we use natural therapies like acupuncture to support your overall health. Acupuncture can:

  • Help boost your immune system to fight off infections.
  • Keep your hormones balanced to support your body’s health.
  • Reduce stress, which can weaken your immune system.

Why Awareness Matters

By learning about cervical cancer and taking steps to prevent it, we can protect the health of the women in our lives—moms, sisters, daughters, and friends. This January, let’s spread the word about the importance of check-ups, vaccines, and healthy habits.
