A Gentle Reminder to Take Care of Yourself and Listen to Your Body
Rosemarie Allen • January 14, 2025

The new year is an exciting time! We make big plans and set goals to do amazing things. But sometimes, we get so busy that we forget to take care of the most important thing—ourselves. This year, let’s remember how important it is to take care of our bodies and minds.

Why Taking Care of Yourself is Important

Taking care of yourself is like giving your body a little gift every day. When you feel tired, stressed, or hungry, your body is sending you messages. It’s saying, "I need rest," "I need a break," or "I need healthy food." If we listen to these messages, we can stay happy, healthy, and strong.

How to Listen to Your Body

Your body talks to you all the time. Here are some ways to understand what it’s saying:

  1. When You’re Tired: If you feel really sleepy or low on energy, that’s your body saying it needs rest. Try going to bed early or taking a short nap.

  2. When You’re Hungry or Full: Eat when your tummy feels empty, but stop when you’re not hungry anymore. Eating slowly helps you notice when you’re full.

  3. When You Feel Pain: Pain is like a warning signal. If something hurts, don’t ignore it. Take a break or ask for help if you need it.

Easy Ways to Take Care of Yourself

Here are simple things you can do every day to feel better:

  1. Start Your Day Right When you wake up, do something that makes you feel good, like stretching, writing down what you’re excited about or the things that you are grateful for. Also taking a few deep breaths can help you to get ready for the day and get your mindset in a more positive space in preparation for the day ahead..

  2. Eat Healthy Snacks Fruits, nuts, and vegetables are great snacks that give you energy. Drinking water is also super important. Start your day with a glass of water to wake up your body. Remember, every process your body does requires water to do so.

  3. Move Your Body
Exercise doesn’t have to be hard. You can dance, play outside, or even do some stretches. Moving your body can make you feel good, helps your mental health, keeps your body flexible and improves blood circulation.

  4. Take Breaks from Screens Too much screen time can make your eyes and head feel tired. Take breaks to look away from your phone or computer, and spend time doing something fun, like reading, drawing, playing with your pet or blowing bubbles.

  5. Be Thankful Before you go to bed, think about three good things that happened that day. Maybe you laughed with a friend or saw a beautiful sunset. Being thankful makes your heart happy.

Rest is Super Important

Rest is like charging your phone. If you don’t get enough rest, you can’t work or play your best. Sleep helps your body feel better and gives your brain time to relax. Try to sleep 8-10 hours every night.

Special Ways to Feel Better

In some places, people use things like acupuncture (tiny needles to help you feel better), massages, and special herbal teas to take care of their health. These are old traditions that can help you relax and stay healthy. If you’re curious, do some research and find out more about the benefits and how they may be able to help you.

Self-Care is for Everyone

Taking care of yourself is not selfish. It helps you feel good so you can do your best and even help others. Start small—maybe just a five-minute break or a healthy snack. By practicing small steps you can make a big difference.

Keep Taking Care of Yourself All Year

Remember, self-care isn’t something you do once and forget about. It’s something you do every day, like brushing your teeth. Some days might be harder than others, and that’s okay. Just keep trying, and be kind to yourself while you're working at it.

Taking care of yourself is like planting seeds. The more you care for them, the more beautiful your garden grows. Start this year by being good to your body and mind, and you’ll be ready for all the amazing things ahead!
